Enkephalin research reagents
Met-enkephalin and Leu-enkephalin are the pentapeptide products of proenkephalin and the endogenous δ-receptor ligands, differing only in the fifth residue. They are degraded within minutes by aminopeptidase N and neprilysin, so enzyme-resistant analogues such as the D-amino-acid-substituted forms are what most receptor work actually uses. The C-terminally extended heptapeptide and octapeptide, and the proenkephalin fragments, are studied as separate species with their own receptor profiles.
