Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide occurs as PACAP-38 and the C-terminally truncated PACAP-27, which shares 68% identity with VIP and acts at the shared VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptors as well as the PACAP-selective PAC1. Separating PAC1 from VPAC signalling is the usual experimental problem, so the two lengths, the (6-38) antagonist fragment and receptor-domain peptides are all used together. PACAP is studied in stress responses, circadian signalling, neuroprotection and migraine.
