Overview
Ovagen is a synthetic tripeptide with the sequence L-glutamyl-L-aspartyl-L-leucine (Glu-Asp-Leu, or EDL). It comes from the Khavinson programme of short peptide bioregulators, in which tissue-derived peptide preparations were narrowed down to defined two-, three-, and four-residue sequences that could be synthesised reproducibly and characterised analytically.
Structurally, EDL pairs the acidic Glu-Asp motif that runs through much of the series with a hydrophobic C-terminal leucine, making it the tripeptide analogue of Bronchogen's tail chemistry.
