Overview
Humanin is a 24-amino-acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene (MT-RNR2) and was the first mitochondrial-derived peptide to be characterized. It was discovered in 2001 during a screen of surviving neurons from an occipital lobe sample, which is how it acquired a name that reflects the survival phenotype rather than any chemical property.
