Overview
SNAP-8, sold under the INCI name acetyl octapeptide-3, is an eight-residue, N-acetylated and C-amidated peptide designed as a mimetic of the N-terminal region of SNAP-25. SNAP-25 is one of the three proteins that form the SNARE complex, the machinery that docks and fuses neurotransmitter vesicles with the presynaptic membrane. By presenting a competing fragment of that sequence, SNAP-8 is studied as an extracellular interference agent in SNARE assembly — a different point of attack from botulinum neurotoxin, which cleaves SNAP-25 inside the cell.
Structurally it is an extended relative of acetyl hexapeptide-8 (Argireline): the same Glu-Glu-Met-Gln-Arg-Arg core with two additional residues, alanine and aspartate, at the C-terminal end.
